Soil microbes: First ones to the banquet table. Article published by Farm and Ranch Guide

Soil health is a lot more complicated than most would like. That’s why there are soil scientists like Larry Cihacek, an NDSU soil scientist at the Soil Science Department in Fargo, who has been studying the soil more than 25 years ago.

For Cihacek, it is all about building soil organic matter (OM) to increase nutrient cycling and crop production. Cihacek has been working with Doug Landblom, Dickinson Research Extension Center beef cattle specialist on a five-year project, helping him with the carbon and other experiments they are conducting on a crop rotation project on Section 19. A five-year crop rotation included hard red spring wheat (both wheat on wheat and rotation wheat), followed by followed by winter triticale and winter rye for hay. After that, they double cropped cover crops and corn; then a field pea/barley forage, and the next year, sunflowers.

“One of the things we wanted to do with this project is find out how these crops would perform without fertilizer. What could our soil do for us?” said Landblom.

Landblom said they discovered the soil was truly “doing a lot of work for us. If we let it work, we will find the soil is quite a servant for us as producers and help us with our dollars and cents.” This project is about soil fertility, crop production, and beef production. And would beef bring a better dollar than crops? With the project, nitrogen fertilizer was not applied to continuous spring wheat in years four and five, and the rotation wheat did not receive N fertilizer in years three to five. They were able to save nitrogen, save fertilizer costs, and improve our yields

“It’s a very dynamic system going on in that soil, and we know it is going on during the growing season, especially the peak when we need the most nutrient available,” Cihacek said. “It is not there because we did not apply commercial fertilizer. Organic matter has carbon in it. Plant roots are very leaky, and they “leak out a lot of stuff that feeds microorganisms. Organic matter is a very complex structure, and it is where our nutrients are stored.”

Even more, it is the glue that holds together soil particles. It also makes our soil feels softer, and allows water to infiltrate, acting like a sponge.

“There is a lot of space in that sponge for water to stay in the soil,” he said.

Cihacek said as a soil fertility specialist, he deals with plant nutrients. Organic matter pulls in plant nutrients. Many of soil nutrients, including sulfur, phosphorus and nitrogen, are part of that organic matter.

“Organic matter comes from plant residues, dead plants. When it breaks down, it releases plant nutrients for the crops. We are trying to figure out how these nutrients cycle through.”

Nutrients that are required for the plants are also required for microorganisms.

“Microorganisms are just living things, like any other living organisms, like us people and cattle. So the organic matter contains these nutrients in the amounts needed and is a storehouse for plant nutrients,” Cihacek said.

The other thing organic matter does for microorganisms is as a food source for them. There are sugars, cellulose, starches – all meant to help break down and release nutrients.

“It is a complete circle of life,” he said.

The other thing necessary for microbial activity is nitrogen. N makes up protein and animals require that to make muscle. The microbes need that N to be active.

“You can have all the carbon in the world but you won’t have microbial activity unless you have adequate nitrogen,” he added. “Everyone has seen where there is a heavy crop of straw. It is plowed down and then the grower has to apply enough nutrients, nitrogen particularly. But the next crop is still somewhat nitrogen deficient."

That’s because those microbes are in the soil, breaking down the OM. As they break down the OM, microbes use up all the nitrogen that is in the soil.

"You have this banquet table with lots of food. The people in the front get the best food and the people in the back might not get anything at all,” he said.

Microbes are at the front of the banquet table and they are going to eat up all the nitrogen before the plants can eat it. When there is crop yellowing after incorporation of heavy residues - that is an indication of N deficiency. The key to soil health is good soil OM.

“One of the things I’ve done is try to figure out how to increase soil OM,” Cihacek said. “I’m not sure if we can solve the world’s problems by taking the CO2 out of the air and putting the OM in the soil. But I do know one thing - if we can increase organic matter, we can increase the productivity of our soil. Even on soils that are marginally productive,” Cihacek said.

Royal-Grow announces new and advanced generation of herbicide adjuvant.

Royal-Grow, a foliar fertilizer and soil enhancement company in Tulsa, Okla., announces the creation of the third generation of Herbicide Booster. This advanced herbicide adjuvant is a necessity for all crop and forage producers.

The third generation of Herbicide Booster is designed with smaller particles to blend quickly with all types of herbicide chemistry. It has a contact to surface absorption time of less than 40 seconds. The new and improved adjuvant, works on all types of seasonal and perennial weeds. It is designed to take to the herbicide’s active ingredient deeper into the plant, resulting in a harder kill.

“Herbicide Booster succeeds when other products fall short,” said Jared McGlothlin, Royal-Grow representative. “Herbicide Booster is an adjuvant that works by aiding the penetration of the herbicide, allowing it to work more efficiently.”

This adjuvant can be added directly to the spray tank. Always mix the adjuvant with herbicide first, then add proper amount of water and mix well. Herbicide Booster - Generation 3, has a recommended application rate of 2 ounces per acre. One 2.5 gallon container will cover approximately 160 acres.

In pasture trials, a desired kill has been achieved with minimal rates of herbicide when applied with Herbicide Booster at 2 ounces per acre. A similar response has been found in crop scenarios such as burn down or when dealing with resistant weeds, such as Mare’s Tail, Kochia and Waterhemp, McGlothlin said.

Royal-Grow customer results published in Progressive Farmer.

Boots and Jon Kelley worked with Royal-Grow to develop a detailed fertility plan that helped the producers double the Oklahoma state average wheat yield in 2015.

“Hands down, it was the highest average bushel per acre yield that we have received off of this farm,” Jon Kelley said. “This year we did not use a fungicide or a starter fertilizer, so we still feel like there is room to grow.“

Kelley applied a top-dress program consisting of Royal-Grow bio-stimulants for $30 per acre, said J.J. Stoeckl, Royal-Grow sales representative. This resulted in an average of 35 bushels per acre yield increase. They are already noticing outstanding results in 2016 and are hoping for another great year. The 2016 wheat is measuring 84 wheat heads per square foot.

Royal-Grow is a pioneer in soil health.

Managing soil health is the easiest and most effective method for enhancing crop and forage production. Crops and forage are heavily dependent on healthy and biologically active soil.

Royal-Grow is a Tulsa based foliar fertilizer company that has a strong focus on microbial enhancement. Royal-Grow’s manufacturer is a pioneer with over 35 years of experience developing microbial and bio-stimulant products that are exceeding customer’s expectations.

"Royal-Grow’s products enhance yields, while also taking a step in the right direction to improve the soil and environment," said Keith Hickson, Royal-Grow representative. "Our company focuses on the biology of the soil. We strive to rebuild the organic matter and microbial life, so the plants and crops can grow in a healthier environment," he said.

Royal-Grow Enzyme Max is a natural, liquid biological that alleviates the effects of compaction, increases nutrient uptake, and promotes healthier plant growth. This product is an advanced composition of minerals, essential nutrients, humic acids, and 36 different strains of live microbes, which are dormant until application. This liquid blend is hassle-free and ready to use right out of the container. It is also compatible with other treatments.

Big Soy Sweetener is a new product in the Royal-Grow line, it is OMRI certified. Big Soy is a specially formulated, cold processed sweetener that delivers a health boosting shot of energy to invigorate plants. Available as a powder and a liquid, Big Soy increases the plant’s BRIX level and enables it to grow into a stronger and healthier plant.

Traditional production practices have depleted soil biological life with the overuse of high salt chemicals, heavy tillage, and the failure to add sufficient organic matter to the soil. It is important for producers to consider the negative effects of high salt inputs, and start using low salt products that do not damage the soil or environment.

Producers are using Royal-Grow as a cost effective management practice for crop and forage production. For more information about Royal-Grow starters, foliar fertilizers and biologicals, contact a Royal-Grow representative at 1-888-292-5760 or
